What is Popping?

Popping is funk style where a dancer contracts then relaxes their muscles extremely quickly to produce a ‘hitting’ or ‘popping’ effect. The four areas of the body that are usually popped are the legs, arms, chest and neck. Popping originated from Boogaloo Sam and the Electric Boogaloos during the 1970s.

POPPING is usually mistaken as an umbrella term for other styles which are often mixed in with popping and boogaloo such as; tutting, strobing, waving and animation.

BOOGALOO
Boogaloo is the dance style where the body appears loose and fluid, typically through rolling or isolating the knees, hips or head. It was created by Boogaloo Sam during the 1970s and further developed by The Electric Boogaloos.

ANIMATION
Animation is a style and technique where the dancer appears to dance or move in a manner similar to stop motion animations. Techniques such as the robot and strobing assist to provide the illusion that the dancer moves as if he were in an stop motion animation.

TUTTING
Tutting, also known as King Tut, is inspired by the hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt, tutting involves positioning the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders in variations of right angles of each other.

WAVING
Waving involves moving body parts in the motion of a wave.

STROBING
Strobing is a technique that gives the illusion that the dancer is moving within a strobe light. A dancer will break up a normal movement by quickly stopping and starting their motions.
